This is the procedure required to treat periodontal disease which, if left untreated can eventually lead to tooth loss.
The initial Diagnosis
Periodontal disease is commonly diagnosed in patients who haven't been to the dentist in a long time. It begins with gingivitis, which can be cured. However, if it is not diagnosed in the early stages, gingivitis will turn into periodontal disease which is treatable only and not fully curable.
Periodontal disease refers to a bacterial infection of the gums that gradually spread to the jaw bone that supports the teeth. It will eventually result in bone loss.
The scaling appointment
Periodontal scaling is a process by which the plaque and tartar build-up, below the gum line, is removed.
It also cleans out pockets between the gum line and the bone beneath.
This is necessary to keep the disease under control. It helps reduce the swelling and redness of the gums and keeps it healthy.
A local anesthetic will be used by the dentist to numb the gums and clean deep underneath the gum line. He will suggest 2 scaling procedures so that your entire mouth doesn't need to be numbed at once.
During each sitting, the excess tartar and plaque will be removed from below the gum line in each tooth and each appointment will take around half an hour or more depending on the severity of the plaque buildup
Follow up care
Once a scaling procedure has been done it won't need to be repeated if the patient diligently maintains their dental hygiene. But they will have to go for regular periodontal maintenance cleanings, which are more in-depth than the traditional clean-ups. These should be repeated once every 3 to 4 months. This method of follow up care is vital for preventing the disease from progressing further.
Living with periodontal disease is challenging yet there are a few ways that you can keep it maintained, by getting a through periodontal scaling done and regular follow up with maintenance cleanings, you can save your teeth.

Restore tooth enamel with a composite filling
When a part of your tooth is damaged or decayed it will weaken your tooth enamel causing sensitivity and pain to appear. You can depend on our experienced dentists to tackle the issues efficiently. Teeth fillings are successful in fighting this enamel loss and will provide protection to your smile by eliminating the tooth decay that starts from within the tooth.
With the help of our composite fillings we restore your tooth enamel back to optimal health.
We offer white tooth fillings that are similar in structure and color to your natural teeth and can even improve these features by bonding with the filling. Our staff are more than happy to discuss your options so that you can receive the white tooth filling for an affordable cost.
White dental fillings are used to repair chipped teeth, minimize gaps in between teeth and make teeth appear even and straight. If you have unsightly metal fillings in your mouth, then you are invited to talk with our panel of dentists and decide about composite fillings.
What steps are involved in filling a tooth?
Initially the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area surrounding the tooth to be filled.
Next, the decayed area of the tooth will be removed by a drill or air abrasion instrument.
The dentist will probe the area to determine whether all the decayed areas have been removed.
Once this is done, he will clean the area of the cavity, removing any bacteria and debris. If the decay is closer to the root your dentist may first put in a liner made of a glass isonomer, composite resist or other material to protect the nerve.
After the filling is in place your dentist will finish and polish it.
In the case of tooth colored fillings a few additional steps are required which are as follows.
After the area of decay has been removed and cleaned, the tooth-colored material is applied in layers and a special light is applied which aids in hardening or "curing" each layer. When this multi layering process is completed, the dentist will trim off the excess material, shape the filling and polish the final restoration.
